We bring to you updates of midweek results across Europe focusing on Nigerian descents who have represented the senior national team or are eligible to don the Green-and-White jersey.

ENGLAND (ROUND 31)

Liverpool 2-2 Bournemouth
Bournemouth pulled off a shock draw with Liverpool in Anfield. The Cherries handed Jordan Ibe a starting place and later pulled him off for Ryan Fraser two minutes after Liverpool went ahead for the first time through Denis Origi. Bournemouth later cancelled out Origi’s 59th minute strike to leave the Reds at risk of being toppled for third place by Manchester City who have a game in hand.

Manchester United 1-1 Everton
Ademola Lookman, like Jordan Ibe, enjoyed the same fate at Old Trafford. Although Lookman was not fielded, Everton was on course for a shock away win, only for Zlatan Ibrahimovic to rescue a point for the Red devils from the penalty spot just before stoppage time.

Chelsea 2-1 Manchester City
Victor Moses, as expected missed out on Chelsea’s tricky home win over Manchester City tie. The Blues, learning to live without the Nigerian winger at least for the moment, had Cesar Azpilicueta deputize him at right-wing-back. Eden Hazard was the hero of the day, scoring the opener and the winner to settle matters in the first half. Kelechi Iheanacho was conspicuously missing from the Citizen’s squad.

Watford 2-0 West Brom
Watford recorded a second consecutive home win, this time to West Brom.  The Hornets introduced Super Eagles new boy, Isaac Success for M’baye Niang in the 79th minute. Niang was involved in both goals, scoring one and proving the provider for captain Troy Deeney in the other.

Arsenal 3-0 West Ham
Arsenal trashed visiting West Ham and made a push back to top 5 forcing Manchester United back to a familiar 6th position in the EPL log. Alex Iwobi did not taste action this time, unlike when he was introduced from the bench in their home draw with Manchester City during the past weekend.

Leicester City 2-0 Sunderland
Wilfred Ndidi was substituted out for the first time since joining the Foxes in January as he helped them record their sixth consecutive win, beating visiting Sunderland. Victor Anichebe made his return from a long injury spell as he was brought in by the Black Cats in the 73rd minute. He had a sight at goal 4 minutes after his introduction and fired from the edge of the box, but his strike rattled the left post. Anichebe has scored 3 goals and made 1 assist this season from a mere 729 minutes on the clock.

GERMANY (ROUND 27)

FSV Mainz 2-3 RB Liepzig
Leon Balogun was confined to Mainz’ bench when they fell to visitors Liepzig. The German-born Super Eagles defender had just made his return to the pitch this past weekend. Austria-born Karim Onisiwo was not listed in the O-Fives’ matchday squad.

Wolfsburg 0-1 Freiburg
Wolfsburg lost to visiting Freiburg without Victor Osihmen in their set up.

GREECE (ROUND 27)

Kerkyra 0-2 Olympiakos Piraeus

Relatively unknown forward, Ifeanyi Onyilov, was unlisted in Kerkyra’s home loss to Olympiakos Piraeus.

Atromitos 0-2 PAOK
Atromitos did not give Abiola Dauda a nod as he watched them fall to visitors PAOK

NETHERLANDS (ROUND 28)

Groningen 2-0 N.E.C.
Taiwo Awoniyi started and lasted the distance in Nijmegen’s second consecutive away loss. Arnaut Danjuma took his turn in the sidelines, as he was the preferred choice of the duo in their past weekend’s fixture.

Willem II 1-2 Den Haag
Bartholomew Ogbeche‘s knee injury kept him out once again as Willem II hosted ADO Den Haag. Belgium-born and Nigerian decent, Funso Ojo started again and completed the encounter in the home loss. The Hague side featured Tyrone Ebuehi prominently once again. Ebuehi has been instrumental to Den Haag’s battle out of the relegation of recent, as they have won three out of their last five league games.

Ajax 4-1 AZ Alkmaar
Fred Friday was not featured in  Alkmaar’s loss away to Ajax Amsterdam.

SPAIN (ROUND 30)

Deportivo La Coruna 0-0 Granada CF
Uche Agbo served out his match ban for the red card he picked up when Granada welcomed Barca in the previous round. Hence, his was missing in action in their away draw at Deportivo.

Sporting Gijon 0-1 Malaga
Gijon could not extend their 3-game unbeaten streak when they lost at home to Malaga. Elderson Echiejile appeared on the Red-and-Whites’ matchday squad but was not introduced to the game of play.
