Performing any search regarding the Champions League head to head record between these two sides would most likely return nothing order than a message indicating they have never met. However, in the only encounter involving both sides, Real Madrid knocked out Napoli in the first round of the 1987/88 European Cup, winning 2-0 at home before a 1-1 draw in Italy.
Real Madrid no doubt are the overwhelming favorites, not only because they are defending champions but also based on their exploits so far in the Spanish top flight. Los Blancos can boast of holding the titles to almost everything winnable last year. With the luxury of the current best player in the world, Cristiano Ronaldo in their roaster, even their greatest rival — Barcelona — will have something to worry about, as it is always the case in the yearly much anticipated El Classico. Only Real Madrid haters will hope the game go against the wish of the Spanish table toppers — even a draw will suffice for Napoli.
Napoli can take solace in the fact that their opponent have not enjoyed a good record against Italian sides. Real Madrid have been eliminated in seven of their last eight home/away ties with Italian sides in the European Cup/Champions League, the only exception coming against Roma in last season’s round of 16. However, the Yellow and Reds do have a difficult match in their hands, a far cry from the relatively easy fixtures that the Champions League group phase handed them. And to make matters worse they will be playing against a team with an almost flawless current home form.
