Welcome back. We bring to you the latest on Nigerians playing in various top tier leagues in Europe. The star performers over the weekend were Alex Iwobi, Henry Onyekuru, and Olarenwanju Kayode. AUSTRIA (ROUND 20)
Austria Vienna 2-0 Mattersburg
Ex-Flying Eagles forward, Olarenwanju Kayode, continued his consistent appearance for continental cup chasers, Austria Vienna. He lasted the entire encounter in their home win over Mattersburg. Kayode is among the top scorers in the Tipico Bundesliga, with 7 goals and 1 assist. Vienna, is placed a position below European qualification, with Altach, Salzburg and Sturm Graz on the top the league table in that order.
Relatively unknown forward, Bright Edomwonyi, is no longer with Sturm Graz, as he just made a winter move to Turkish top tier side, Caykur Rizespor. Before his transfer to Turkey, Bright scored 4 goals and bagged 3 assists for Graz.
BELGIUM (ROUND 21)
The Jupiler Pro League will resume this weekend. The league has been on recess for about two weeks now. Here is an update as of December 27th, 2016:
Genk 2-0 Gent
Wilfred Onyinye Ndidi’s final match in Genk’s colors ended in an emotional win over K.A.A Gent. He lasted the entire encounter helping his home team trash Gent, who has Moses Simon, Rabiu Ibrahim and Anderson Esiti in their books. Both Esiti and Simon started for Gent, but only the latter played till the end, with Esiti subbed out as early as the 44th minute. Rabiu stayed in the bench during the encounter. At the time of this writing, Ndidi has already debuted for Leicester City in their loss to Chelsea.
Ooestende 1-3 Eupen
Joseph Akpala remained in Oostende’s dugout in their loss at home to Eupen. Wheareas compatriot, Henry Onyekuru (Eupen) stole the headlines on the other side of the pitch with two expertly taken goals. With the double Onyekuru has now notched 10 goals and recorded 4 assists for Eupen so far this season, placing him 4th in the top scorers log. Eupen’s Jamabo George was also on for the entire encounter. However, Anthony Bassey was not listed in Eupen’s match day squad.
Elderson Echiejile has been recalled to parent club, Monaco (France).
CROATIA (ROUND 20)
Rijeka 1-0 Istra 1961
Ex Flying Eagles trainee, and Istra Number 9, Theophilus Solomon clocked 90 minutes, but failed to score in their away loss to Goodness Ajayi’s Rijeka. Ajayi was subbed in on the 74th minute. Theophilus has 5 goals credited to him so far this season, whereas, Ajayi has none.
ENGLAND (ROUND 21)
Swansea 0-4 Arsenal
CAF reigning Youth Player of the Year, Alex Iwobi,was in blistering form from start to finish, helping Arsenal rout sorry Swansea in their own backyard. Iwobi was preferred to more experienced players upfront playing from the left, and he rewarded Arsene Wenger’s confidence in him by forcing Swansea to scoring two own goals. He was also instrumental in the build up to the Gunners’ fourth unanswered goal. No wonder he was voted the Man-of-the-Match.
Watford 0-0 Middlesbrough
The Hornets were held at Vicarage Road by visiting Middlesbrough. Odion Ighalo remained in the bench during the encounter. Whereas, teammate Isaac Success (Watford) is still out due to muscle complaints.
Everton 4-0 Manchester City **(MATCH OF THE WEEK)**
In what was probably Pep Guardiola’s biggest defeat of his career, Manchester City could not find ways to curtail rampaging Toffees as they fell to a heavy defeat away. Everton’s new signing of Nigerian decent, Ademola Lookman, put an icing on the cake four minutes after his introduction in the dying minutes of the encounter by slotting the ball underneath Claudio Bravo with a veteran type composure. Guardiola introduced Kelechi Iheanacho in the 64th minute but to no avail. Will he say he made a mistake for starting Aguero this time?
Leicester City 0-3 Chelsea
In the battle of Super Eagles players, Leicester City lined up Ahmed Musa and new recruit, Wilfred Ndidi against a Chelsea side who appeared to be wounded from their earlier Premier League loss to Tottenham. Like wounded lions Chelsea roaring with 3 unanswered goals past the Foxes. Musa was pulled out for Demarai Gray in the 71st minute, while Ndidi lasted the entire encounter in his Premier League debut. Victor Moses, on the other side of the pitch clocked 90 minutes and extra time for the Blues.
Manchester United 1-1 Liverpool
Ovie Ejaria watched from the bench as his Liverpool ended Jose Mourinho’s new found winning streak at Old Trafford. Ibrahomovic saved Manchester from defeat.
Hull City 3-1 Bournemouth
Jordan Ibe (Bournemouth) was an unused substitute in Bournemouth’s away loss to Hull city.
FRANCE (ROUND 20)
Lille 1-1 St. Etienne
Lille were held to a score draw at home by St Etienne with Vincent Enyeama between the sticks for the home side.
Angers 1-1 Bordeaux
Dickson Nwakaeme’s services seem to only be needed in cup games, as he was not listed again in Angers’ score draw at home to Bordeaux
GERMANY (ROUND 16)
Eintracht Frankfurt 3-0 FSV Mainz 05
Leon Balogun and Karim Onisiwo’s Mainz fell away to Frankfurt without the services of the Nigerian defender. Onisiwo on his part, started and was replaced in the 46th minute.
Hertha Berlin 2-0 Damstadt
Damstadt did not feature Obinna Nsofor in loss on the road to Hertha Berlin
ITALY (ROUND 20)
Torino 2-2 AC Milan
Torino were held by vising AC Milan in a fiery enconter that drew seven cautions. Serbian midfielder, Adem Ljajic failed to convert a penalty kick opportunity in the 32nd minute, which would have put his side up 3-0 at the intermission. Nigeria’s forgotten midfielder, Joel Obi started the encounter and was booked on the 57th minute only to be subbed out on the 61st after AC Milan leveled from a spot kick.
Crotone 0-1 Bologna
Simeon ‘Simy’ Tochukwu’s Crotone fell at home to Bologna who had Flying Eagles forward, Orji Okonkwo in their bench. Simy was introduced in the 78th minute. Bologna loanee, Sadiq Umar is still out due to injury.
NETHERLANDS (ROUND 18)
Roda 0-2 Feyenoord
Abdul Ajagun, was in action for Roda throughout their encounter with visiting Feyenoord. The visitors ran away with two unanswered goals.
G.A. Eagles 1-3 Alkmaar
Fred Friday was an 87th minute substitute for Alkmaar in their away win at Go Ahead Eagles.
Heerenveen 2-0 den Haag
Ado den Haag continued their poor run, losing away to Heerenveen. Super Eagles hopeful, Tyronne Ebuehi was on for the entire duration for den Haag.

Willem II 0-1 Nijmegen
Former Super Eagles forward, Bartholomew Ogbeche was thrown into the fray in the 81st minute. But his introduction by Willem II could not prevent them from avoiding a home defeat to Taiwo Awoniyi’s Nijmegen. Taiwo remained in the dugout for the entire duration of the match.
PORTUGAL (ROUND 17)
Feirense 0-0 Guimaraes
Oghenekaro Etebo, played until the dying minutes when his Feirense took on visiting Guimaraes. The encounter ended in a stalemate.
Vitoria Setubal 1-0 Nacional
New rave of the moment, Mikel Ndubuisi Agu was on for the entire encounter in the heart of Setubal’s midfield as they overcame Nacional at home. Mikel Agu has been a super regular for Setubal since his loan move from Porto FC. He has been named three times in the Primeira Liga Team of The Week.
RUSSIA (ROUND 17)
The Russian Premier League will resume in March. The league has been on recess since December last year. Here is an update as of December 5th, 2016
UFA 1-0 Tomsk
Kehinde Fatai returned to UFA’s lineup as a reserve player in their home game versus Tomsk. He was given the nod to play in the 64th minute. Teammate, Sylvester “Sly” Igbonu, worked a full shift, as they both helped UFA beat visiting Tomsk.
Amkar 3-0 Orenburg
Fegor Ogude was in action to help Amkar trash visiting Orenburg 3-nil. But it was Brian Idowu who put himself in the scoresheet to vindicate Nigerian national team coach, Gernot Rohr, who recently named him as one of his next prospect for the Super Eagles troubled Right-Back position. Idowu scored Amkar’s second in the 35th minute. Both Nigerians lasted the entire encounter. Nigerian decent, and Norwegian-born, Chuma Anene was introduced in the 68th minute by Amkar Perm. Anene is still eligible to play for Nigeria, as he has only featured for Norway in the underaged categories.
SPAIN (ROUND 18)
Granada CF 2-1 Osasuna
The center official did not hesitate to give Uche Agbo (Granada) a straight rad card, after he invited the disciplinary measure by charging at an opponent in the 73rd minute. Granada also saw another red later in the encounter but held Osasuna to a score draw at Estadio Nuevo Los Cármenes (Granada).
TURKEY (ROUND 17)
Osmanlispor 0-2 Besiktas
Aminu Umar started and completed the match for Osmanlispor, but fell with them at home to Turkish giants, Besiktas.
Alanyaspor 2-3 Rizespor
Two Nigerian defenders, Keneth Omeruo and Godfrey Oboabona, locked horns in the encounter between Alanyaspor and Rizespor. Starting for the sides respectively, Omeruo was the one who got cautioned of the two, although both lasted the entire encounter. It was a five-goal thriller but the visitors, Rizespor, stole the maximum points eventually.
Kasimpasa 3-0 Genclerbirligi
Emem Eduok was brought in on the 67th minute by Kasimpasa as they trashed visiting Genclerbirligi. However Kenny Otigba seems to have lost his starting spot as he was not introduced by the Apaches.
Bursaspor 1-2 Trabzonspor
Ogenyi Onazi lasted 87 minutes for Trabzonspor in their away win over Bursaspor.
Baseksehir 5-0 Kayserispor
Musa Muhammad was not in the match day squad for table toppers Baseksehir in their whitewashing of visiting Kayserispor. However, he has featured prominently for the newly promoted side in the Turkish Cup.
Fernabahce 2-2 Adanaspor
Fernabahce, without Emmanuel Emenike, were held at home by Adanaspor.
