It was another exciting weekend in Europe, with mixed results from Nigerian players abroad. We present the winners and losers from the various top tiers, where Nigeria has strong representation.

AC Wolfsberger 0-3 Austria Vienna
Olarenwanju Kayode failed to score a second consecutive league goal for Austria Vienna when they played away to AC Wolsberger during the weekend. The Nigerian former Flying Eagles player, who is currently being considered for Nigeria’s senior national team, however, picked up a yellow card on the 72nd minute of the encounter. He was immediately replaced by Austria international, Kelvin Freismnbichler, who went on to score Vienna’s third in the away rout. Kayode has 5 goals and 1 assist to his credit in the Tipioco Bundesliga this season.

Rapid Vienna 1-2 Sturm Graz

Another Nigerian in Bright Edomwonyi,  also recorded an away win with his club, Sturm Graz, over Rapid Vienna. It was a similar fate for Bright, as he only lasted for 71 minutes during the encounter. Bright has scored one goal less (4 goals), compared to Kayode’s 5 so far this season.  But the former is superior in terms of assists garnered, 3 assists, versus Kayode’s 1 assist.

Ooestende 6-0 Genk
Onyinye Ndidi ‘s brilliant show so far this season was dented when he suffered a humiliating loss with Genk, playing away to Joseph Akpala’s Oostende.  Despite enjoying a full game time, Ndidi could do nothing to shield Genk from conceding 6 goals against the rampaging homers. He picked up a yellow in the 55th minute, whereas, Akpala did his little bit by cheering his teammates to victory, from the sidelines.

Standard Liege 4-1 Waregem
Super Eagles left-backs, Elderson Echiejile and Kingsley Madu, were both conspicuously missing from the line up of Standard Liege and Waregem, respectively. Echiejile’s Standard Liege had the upper hand at home to Madu’s Waregem.

Gent 3-0 Kortrijk
Moses Simon seems to have fallen down the pecking order at Gent, a similar position he finds himself in the Nigerian national team. His limited time, coming in at the 79th minute of play did not affect Gent as they put 3 unanswered goals past visiting Kortrijk. Anderson Esiti watched from the dugout. Rabiu Ibrahim, the third player Nigerian player in Gent’s roaster, was not listed for this encounter.

Eupen 3-3 Westerlo
Super Eagles uncapped youngsters, Anthony Bassey and Henry Onyekuru, both posted good representation for Nigeria in Belgium, by scoring Eupen’s second and third goals respectively, in a that ended 3 all, at home to Westerlo. Onyekuru is an exciting left winger who is currently turning heads and in high demand in Europe. Anthony Bassey, likewise, could be an option for Nigeria in the problematic Right-Back position, since he has proved to be a good replacement for injured teammate, Jamabo George in that position. Will coach Rohr look their way?

Watford FC, still suffering from Odion Ighalo’s poor form, lost at home to Stoke City. Ighalo was pulled off the bench the 59th minute, but to no avail. He has only managed a goal this season, a far cry from his scintillating form at this stage last season. Super Eagles new invitee, Isaac Success, is nearing a return to the Hornet’s line up, having been sidelined due to a thigh muscle injury for a couple weeks.

Chelsea 2-1 Tottenham Hotspur
Victor Moses was awarded the Man of the Match yet again, as he scored for Chelsea, to end Spurs unbeaten run. He gave Chelsea their  7th consecutive win. However, Spurs went home with a consolation for ending Chelsea’s clean sheets run.

Burnley 1-2 Manchester City
Kelechi Iheanacho was an unused substitute in City’s slim win away to Burnley. Argentine international, Sergio Aguero with a brace for City.

Alkmaar 5-1 Heracles
Alkmaar hammered Heracles at home, but did not give Fred Friday a nod, not even as a substitute. Alkmaar’s handler, coach van Dem Brom seems to have lost faith in Friday’s scoring abilities.

PSV 3-1 den Haag
It was a different tale for Super Eagles new invitee, Tyronne Ebuehi, who has now become a super regular at den Haag’s right-back. ADO Den Haag, however, fell again, this time away to PSV Eindhoven.

Nijmegen 3-2 Twente
Taiwo Awoniyi has found himself in a similar situation as Fred Friday of Alkmaar. He has also failed to reward the faith earlier bestowed on him, because of his inability to score. Hence, he was again confined to the bench by Nijmegen in their home win versus Twente. This is not a good sign, as parent club, Liverpool needs him to develop his game, for a possible future in the English Premier League.
