It has been revealed that dropped Super Eagles and Dream Team goal keeper, Daniel Akpeyi of Chippa United, who was later called up to replace injured first choice goal keeper, Carl Ikeme, got injured in an ABSA Premiership game yesterday. This unfortunate news is coming at a bad time, ten days before the Super Eagles’s World Cup Qualifying match against Algeria. Nigeria is left with Ikechukwu Ezenwa, and the less experienced, Dele Alampasu to provide cover in goal.
The fact is we have no good option, unless Vincent Enyeama comes out of retirement temporarily to save this situation. Should we settle for Ezenwa or Alampasu? Let’s consider that Ezenwa caught the eyes of Athletico Madrid, when he posted heroics while representing our local league team, during their tour of Spain just a few months ago. This experience can come to bear for an important world cup qualifier against Algeria. But the downside of fielding him is his inactivity due to the end of the NPFL season. On the other hand Alampasu may not have played in a high magnitude as Ezenwa, but he has been consistently representing his Portuguese third division side. The pick is a hard one to make.
Where is Dele Aiyenugba and Austin Ejide?
Former Super Eagles goal keeper, Dele Aiyenugba, who wears the glove for Hapoel Ashkelon in Greece, has been consistent in goal, but his current form is suspect. letting in 5 goals during the weekend, when Ashkelon played away to Maccabi Haifa.
On the part of Austin Ejide, he has been unattached.
This crisis may be a blessing in disguise for any of Alampasu or Ezenwa, should they post a shut out in Uyo. My heart is with Alampasu. I believe the Super Eagles’ next golden generation will come from our Golden Eaglets who were world beaters at the Emirates in 2013. I expect to see Alampasu, Ihenacho, Success, Musa Muhammed, Musa Yahaya and Chidiebere Nwakali form the nucleus of the Super Eagles in future. Alampasu may just be the next revelation versus Algeria.
