We present a round up from some of the top leagues in Europe, of performances of Super Eagles players, as well as those who are eligible to play for the country’s senior national team.
Ex-Flying Eagles Striker, Olarenwanju Kayode of Austria Vienna played for the entire duration away to local rivals, Rapid Vienna. He had a hand in the second goal, providing an assist for Austrian international, Alexander Grunwald, to complete 0-2 away victory for the Europa League hopefuls. Austria Vienna now trail Bright Edomwonyi’s Strum Graz, by seven points in just six game so go.
Strum Graz, the league leaders, shared the spoils with visiting Mattersburg. Bright starred for 77 minutes in the encounter which ended 2-2. The Little known 22 year old striker, has notched 4 goals and 2 assists, compared to Kayode’s 3 goals and 1 assist, so far this season.
Out of favor Super Eagles striker, Joseph Akpala was not suited for Oostende in their 2-2 draw at home to Krotijk. Akpala has not scored this season after 11 rounds of matches in the Belgian Jupiler league.
19 year old Henry Onyekuru was a victor with Eupen this weekend, as they managed to overcome visiting Gent, 3-2. The latter has three Nigerians in their books, who were all uncharacteristically on the bench at kick off time. Of the trio, only Super Eagles winger, Moses Simon was introduced later in the game. Anderson Esiti and Rabiu Ibrahim are the other Nigerians in Gent’s squad.
After scoring a spectacular goal for Genk against Athletic Bilbao at the Europa League last week, Super Eagles defender, Onyinye Ndidi was at it again, helping his club to a 1-0 home win over St. Truiden. Onyinye has been deployed as a left wing back so far this season, the same position he played when he scored last season’s best goal in Belgium.
Super Eagles right full back defender, Elderson Echiejile made his first start for Standard Liege on a bright note, as they trashed visiting Waasland-Beveren, 5-0. Before now, he had spent most of the season on the bench since his loan move from Monaco.
Theophillus Solomon continued his fine form as a super regular for new club, Istra 1961, in their goalless draw with visiting Hajduk Split. The 20 year old striker has scored four times after 13 round of matches in the HNL.
League leaders, Rijeka, stayed atop the table after beating Zapresic at home. Goodness Ajayi, elder brother of Watford Striker, Success Isaac, was confined to the bench for the duration of the game which ended 1-0 in their favor
New Super Eagles teen sensation, Alex Iwobi lasted for 61 minutes in Arsenal’s frustrating 0-0 home draw with Middlesbrough. Iwobi played as a left winger behind Alex Sanchez in a 4-2-3-1 formation deployed by manager Arsene Wenger.
Ahmed Musa registered his first premiership goal, scoring the first of three, in Leicester’s 3-1 victory over visitors, Crystal Palace. Musa showed composure with a beautiful finish, after he met Algeria’s Islam Slimani’s cross outside the 18 yard box.
Odion Ighalo started for Watford, in the absence of compatriot and new Super Eagles invitee, Success Issac, who reportedly suffered a knock the previous weekend. Watford managed to pull a 0-0 draw away to Swansea.
Super Eagles retiree, Vincent Enyeama was between the sticks again to help Lille to a 2-1 home win over Bastia. Lille remain 16th in Ligue 1’s 20-team table.
Dickson Nwakaeme was introduced in the 83’rd minute by Angers, at home to Toulouse. However, the 30 year old forward could not help to change the scoreline, which remained goalless after full time. Angers are 9th on the table. Whereas, Toulouse are still in the European qualification zone, at 4th place.
The trio of Ola Aina, Victor Moses, and Super Eagles captain, Obi Mikel taught their former manager a bitter lesson when Chelsea trashed Manchester United 4-0 at home. While John Obi Mikel watched from the stands, Victor Moses continued in his new cherished role as a right wing back, tormenting the manager who never gave him a chance – Mourinho – while at the Blues. Victor did not score this time, but lasted the entire encounter while Ola Aina remained in the bench.
Wonder kid, Kelechi Iheanacho saved Manchester City from losing at home against stubborn Southampton. It only took Kelechi nine minutes after introduction in the second half, to demonstrate why he can easily be regarded as the most deadly Nigerian Striker at the moment. Kelechi raced and found space for himself to connect Leroy Sane’s precise pass despite being under pressure from a defender. He slammed the ball giving Forster no chance to react. Manchester City are without a win after five consecutive games, however, they still remain in the summit of the Premier League with 20 points. Arsenal and Liverpool are placed second and third, respectively, with the same number of points as the leaders, but have an inferior goal deferential.
Super Eagles defender, Leon Balogun was back in action for Mainz away to Shalke. He was booked in the 21’st minute and could not save his club from losing 3-0 to the home team.
Nigeria’s other representative in the Bundesliga, Obinna Nsofor, did not taste action for Darmstadt in their 3-1 home win over Victor Osihmen’s Wolfsburg. The U-17
FIFA World Cup highest goal record holder is still ineligible to represent Die Wölfe as he is yet to attain the age of maturity.
Forgotten Nigerian midfielder, Joel Obi was introduced by Torino in the 74th minute, as they held visiting Lazio 2-2.
Sadiq Umar’s Bologna had a similar fate playing at Stadio Renato Dall’Ara, as they could only manage a draw against visitors, Sassuolo. Umar replaced Floccari in the 80th minute.
Simeon “Simmy” Tochukwu Nwankwo’s Crotone fell 1-2 to visiting Napoli. His introduction in the 54th minute did little to help his club avoid defeat.
Former Flying Eagles midfielder, Abdul Ajagun was in action for Roda JC, as they welcomed Tyronne Ebuehi‘s ADO Den Haag. The game ended in a 1-1 stalemate with Tyronne getting in the referee’s books in the 74th minute. Super Eagles hopeful, an Nigeria’s only representative in the Primeira Liga, Oghenekaro Etebo, started for newly promoted Feirense and lasted 89 minutes in their 1-1 home draw with Vitoria Setubal.
Just as Etebo is to the Portuguese top division, new Super Eagles invite, Uche Agbo, is the only Nigerian player in the Spanish top division. New Granada coach, Alcaraz Lucas, had no choice but to start the midfielder turned defender this time, after a humiliating defeat in the hands of Athletico Madrid the previous weekend. Agbo did not disappoint, helping his team hold Sporting Gijon at home, in a game that ended goalless.
Rizespor super regular central defender, Godfery Oboabona helped them overcome Genclerbirligi 2-1 at home. Oboabona was cautioned in the 41st minute.
Keneth Omeruo also starred for the entire game time. But unlike his compatriot, he could not prevent his team, Alanyaspor, from going down 0-2 at home to Bursaspor.
Ogenyi Onazi’s Trabzanspor shocked Galatasaray in thier own backyard 0-1. Onazi was substituted immediately in the 89th minute, after he picked up a yellow card.
Former Golden Eaglet captain and Super Eagles right back, Musa Mohammed, was still conspicuously missing from Basaksehir’s squad, as his newly promoted club continued their fairy tale run staying atop the Super Lig after 8 round of matches. They consolidated thier position winning 2 nil on the road to Kardmir Karabuk.
It was also good news away from home, for Super Eagles hopeful, Kenny Otigba. His club – Kasimpasa – defeated Aminu Umar’s Osmanlispor 1-2. Both players played the entire duration.
